Short Description:

Lutamator elegans is an aetideid calanoid copepod known after female (5.20 mm in length) off Brazilian coast near sea-bottom.

Taxonomic Description:

Female. (Description after Alvarez (1984) with modifications). Total length 5.2 mm. Cephalothorax nearly 3 times longer than abdomen. Cephalon and Th1, as well as Th4-Th5 fused. Th5 ending with a small point. Rostrum short, like blunt plate. A1 24-segmented, reaching the end of cephalothorax. Ri and Re A2 of the same length. Coxopodite A2, basipodite and Re1 A2 with 1 seta each, Re2 A2 with 2 setae, Ri1 A2 with 1, external lobe of Ri2 A2 with 7 long terminal and 1 shorter posterior seta, internal lobe with 7 (4 long and 3 short setae). Md palp base and Ri1 Md without seta, Ri2 Md with 5 setae. Mx1 gnathobase with 12 setae, second internal lobe with 5, third with 2 setae, protopodite near Ri base with 4 setae, Ri and Re with 11 setae each, external lobe with 8 setae. Mx2 with claw-like spine on fifth and fourth endites. First to fourth endites with spinules on surface near proximal border of lobes. Mxp robust with groups of 2, 3 and 3 setae (looking from proximal to distal end of the segment). P1-P4 with segmentation typical of the family. Re P1 with external spines on each segment; Ri P1 with well developed external lobe covered with hairs, basipodite with small spine in external distal corner of segment. P2 coxopodite with internal seta, P3 and P4 coxopodites lacking such seta. Numbers of teeth on terminal spines of P2-P4 Re3 is 46, 50 and 54 respectively.

Male unknown.

Vertical distribution:

The species was found at depths of 900 m and 460 m above the sea bed (Alvarez, 1984).

Geographical distribution:

The species is known off the Brazilian coast (Alvarez, 1984).

Type locality: off the Brazilian coast.

Material examined:

The species absent in collections of the Zoological Institute, Russian Academy of Sciences, St. Petersburg.
